John Brown Birthplace

The city of Torrington played an important role in ending slavery in America.

There are multiple houses that were part of the underground railroad in Torrington and former slaves that fought in the Civil War are buried in the Historic Burrville Cemetery.

Torrington was also the birthplace of John Brown, an American abolitionist leader born on May 9, 1800.

The house in which he was born is no longer standing, but the site where it was located can still be visited on John Brown Road (off of University Drive) in the Wrightville section of Torrington.

Here, visitors can see where John Brown grew up and learn more about his significance in ending slavery in America.

At the back of the site is The John Brown Trail, a two-thirds mile loop that takes visitors through the property and lets them experience where John Brown spent his childhood years.

On December 2, 1858, John Brown was executed by hanging in Charles Town, Virginia after being criminally charged for murder, inciting slave insurrection, and Treason against the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The city of Torrington honored Brown through the unveiling of the Torrington Civil Rights Mural on Juneteenth, painted by artist Ben Keller on the wall of the WAPJ building on Water Street.

The mural features John Brown as well as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and poet Amanda Gorman.

To learn more about John Brown and Torrington’s role in ending slavery in America, stop by the Torrington Historical Society Museum at 192 Main Street in Torrington or visit their website.

Site of Borden's Condensed
Milk Factory

Many people may not know that the world’s first condensed milk factory was located in Torrington, Connecticut. The factory building, which was built by Milo Burr, was put into use in 1857 by Gail Borden, who discovered the process of milk preservation by evaporation and condensation. Borden’s factory was located alongside and powered by the waterfall that comes from Burr Pond. Although the factory burned down in 1877, some foundations can still be seen along the side of Burr Mountain Road. The remains are now a Connecticut State Archeological Preserve.

Coe Memorial Park Boulder

The land where Coe Memorial Park exists once belonged to Lyman Wetmore Coe and Eliza Seymour Coe, who were lifetime residents of the city. After they both passed away, their three children gifted the property to the City of Torrington, with one condition being that a proper memorial to the Coe family be placed on the land.

This boulder, originally located in West Torrington along Route 4, had been admired by Eliza Coe, and the City of Torrington decided that it would be the perfect surface on which to place a bronze tablet to memorialize the Coe family and their gift to the city.

The 15-ton boulder was moved to Coe Memorial Park in 1908 and the bronze tablet was installed the following year.
