"Main Street Torrington" A New Non-Profit

Heavy hitters of downtown Torrington have organized a non-profit and partnered up with the CT Main Street Network.

A new non-profit organization has been established to focus on the revitalization of downtown Torrington.  Main Street Torrington, Inc., is committed to restoring vitality to downtown using the Four Point Approach of the National Main Street Center, a program affiliated with the National Trust for Historic Preservation.  Main Street Torrington ‘s  board members are President Charlotte Rossi, owner of Reibman’s; Treasurer/Secretary Kristin Roberts of The Roberts Tax Group; Mark McEachern, Executive Director of the Torrington Historical Society; Fiona de Merell, UConn Torrington, and Judith McElhone, Executive Director for Five Points Gallery.  The board has appointed Sharon Waagner as Executive Director.  Her office is located at 23 Franklin Street in downtown Torrington.

Utilizing the Four Points Approach: Organization, Promotion, Design/Historic Preservation, and Economic Restructuring, the group will partner with identified stakeholders such as local businesses and non-profits, the City of Torrington, and the Torrington Development Corporation, who also share the vision of a vibrant, healthy destination for local residents and visitors to the Northwest Corner of Connecticut.  Main Street Torrington’s focus is to encourage and promote the development and improvement of downtown Torrington while maintaining its unique physical, economic, historic and cultural characteristics.  With assistance from Connecticut Main Street Center, the group will conduct educational seminars and programs designed to assist the community in developing action plans for revitalization.  Immediate plans include assisting downtown businesses with a focused marketing strategy.  Main Street Torrington will work closely with the It's Happening Here website, using it to promote events and activities.

The Connecticut Main Street Center has welcomed Main Street Torrington as the newest partnership in the CT Main Street Network.  Kimberly Parsons-Whitaker, Associate Director of the Center, said, “We have been working with community leaders in Torrington over the past seven years, encouraging them to develop a dedicated management program for downtown.  Main Street Torrington is in the process of forming a broad-based and representative group of people dedicated to ensuring that downtown Torrington is a vibrant and healthy Main Street community.  We look forward to assisting Torrington as they continue to bring new life and enthusiasm to downtown.”
